Top ten things you would take during an apocalypse

There are the obvious things one should have to be prepared for an apocalypse:
1.      Water or some sort of filtration or water purification system.2.      Food3.      First aid kit with medication (antibiotics).4.      Firearm of some sort and ammo.5.      A good knife.6.      Matches.7.      Clothes (it’s probably going to get cold). Don’t forget some good shoes.8.      Shelter. Either find some or bring a sturdy tent.9.      Rope (it comes in handy).10.  Duct tape (you can do anything with that stuff).

Then there are the not so obvious or handy things one needs to survive an apocalypse:
1.      My hubby. I don’t know what I’d do without him. I could surely survive alone, but with him I could do anything.2.      Board games. Monopoly, Pictionary, and Cranium are my weapons of choice. I kick @$$ at them. One needs to keep occupied when faced with utter boredom.3.      My library. My TBR pile is so deep it could keep me entertained for years. Huh, maybe I am a prepper after all. ;)4.      Notebooks. Without electricity, this is where I’ll have to do my writing/scribbling/thinking.5.      Chocolate. This doesn’t need an explanation, does it?6.      Chap Stick/Sunscreen. If you’re going to be outside a lot, these will come in handy.7.      Yoga/sweat pants. Comfy=Happy8.      A dog. Not only are they great companions but they can also warn you of danger.9.      Tools. I’m a very handy gal. I’d finally have time to tackle all the furniture refinishing projects piling up in my basement.10.   Toiletries. Without toothpaste and soap the smell alone might kill me.

Thank you for having me!

AUTHOR BIO:
All my life I’ve dreamed of stories or have had my nose buried in one. I live in Edmonton, Canada with my husband and my weird sense of humor. Across the Wire is my first novel.

I love old war movies, dystopian fiction, and any story with action, a good plot, and characters I'd get into a fight at the pub for. Not that I'm a brawler or anything. Unless you think that out-of-print book or vintage piece at the thrift shop is going home with you instead of me. Then, my friend, the gloves are off.

Some say if you have your nose buried in a book, you're missing out on life. I say my nose is buried in a book because one life is not enough.

Excerpt

Nat, if there’s any point in time when you doubt how I feel about you, I want you talk to me, don’t bail on me,” he says piercing me with those gorgeous green eyes.

“I won’t. We only have to wait a year until you’re home,” I say with a smile.

“Yep, one year. Plus we’ll see each other when I’m around home for concerts, and you’re going to stay with me a few days when you can,” he says with a knowing look.

“Yes babe, I told you I would,” I say with a smile as I lean in and softly press my lips to his.

Before I can register what he’s doing he has me lying on my back and he’s settled between my “Round two,” he says with a wink as he quickly moves down my body to my sensitive spot. He wastes no time getting me ready for more of him. His tongue hits my sacred spot, making my body jump. Parker makes sure I’m not going anywhere as he continues his tongue assault on my body, then thrusting two fingers inside my aching walls.

“Please babe, I need you inside of me,” I whimper.

“I will soon, I’m enjoying tasting you,” he says before he dives back in with his tongue making

It doesn’t take Parker long to have me reaching bliss and calling him all sorts of God-like names.

My body feels like mush, but I can’t get enough of him. I wish I could have him every day, but that’s what makes our times together even more special.

Soon Parker is pushing inside my wet core waking my insides back up. I lean up towards Parker to kiss him. I wrap my arms around his neck, allowing my fingers to play in his sexy messed-up I wrap my legs firmly around Parker’s waist wanting him to push even deeper inside of me.

Excerpt:
His mouth twitched and I could tell he was doing that thing where he tried to decide what to say. “I think we should go out on a date.”
“What?” My eyebrows pulled together and I frowned.
“A date. Like to the movies or grab some food.” He shrugged one shoulder and gave me a half smile.
“The movies?” I stared at him dumbfounded. Go to a movie theater?
“Or whatever you do in Lilaria on dates.” He scratched at his chin. “I’m willing to do something else.”
I looked down at my bare feet sticking out of the faded night pants and thought about it. Just the idea made my stomach do flips. Could I have a normal night with him after he had turned away from me? After he had seen me mostly naked?
“You’re asking me out on a date?” My brain refused to completely compute what was happening.
“I’d like to see you again.” His head bobbed a little as if he was agreeing with what he had said. “I’d like to get to know you better.”
Maybe it was that last sentence. Or perhaps it was the fact that I really had enjoyed talking with him last night. It could even be the fact that he looked so damn adorable standing there asking me for a date. But my mouth once again took over and my answer burst forth without thought.
“I’d like that.”
“Good.” A grin broke out on his face. “Tonight?”
“Um, I have to check my schedule.” I frowned.
“You know, with any other girl I might think you were trying to find an excuse, but you probably really do have to check your calendar.” He chuckled, but I caught the nervous hint underneath.
“I’m not trying to find an excuse.” I rolled my eyes. “Free time is sometimes hard to come by.”
“Yeah, I’ve noticed.” He smiled sheepishly. “About last night—”
“No.” I shook my head adamantly. “Let’s just forget last night.”
“There are some things a man can’t forget.” He looked at me with deep eyes. “But we can start over—try things from the beginning.”
“This means we’re not going to talk about the whole stripping mishap, right?” I stood up and held out my hand.
“Oh, now that isn’t something anyone can forget.” He wrapped his fingers around mine. “Hi, I’m David Rhodes.”
“Hi, David. I’m Cathy.”
“Nice pj’s.” His eyes ran over my body and I wondered if he was imagining what was underneath.
“I wasn’t exactly expecting company.” I frowned.
“Would you have dressed up if you’d known I was coming?” He still had my hand wrapped in his.
“Well, you’ve already seen me puke in a potted plant and hungover the next day.” I shrugged. “This is actually an improvement.”
“Even hungover, you were gorgeous.” He winked and finally let go of my hand.
“Wow.” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Are you practicing these compliments in the mirror at night?”
“I can’t reveal my secrets.” He tucked his hands back into his pockets.

Must Love Otters by Eliza Gordon Blog Tour

Welcome to my tour stop for Must Love Otters by Eliza Gordon.  This is an adult romantic comedy and  the tour runs February 24th- March 7th and will consist of reviews, guest posts, interviews and more. You can find the full schedule on the tour page.

Must Love Otters by Eliza Gordon

Hollie Porter is the chairwoman of Generation Disillusioned: at twenty-five years old, she’s saddled with a job she hates, a boyfriend who’s all wrong for her, and a vexing inability to say no. She’s already near her breaking point, so when one caller too many kicks the bucket during Hollie’s 911 shift, she cashes in the Sweethearts’ Spa & Stay gift certificate from her dad and heads to Revelation Cove, British Columbia. One caveat: she’s going solo. Any sweethearts will have to be found on site.

Hollie hopes to find her beloved otters in the wilds of the Great White North, but instead she’s providing comic relief for staff and guests alike. Even Concierge Ryan, a former NHL star with bad knees and broken dreams, can’t stop her from stumbling from one (mis)adventure to another. Just when Hollie starts to think that a change of venue doesn’t mean a change in circumstances, the island works its charm and she starts to think she might have found the rejuvenation she so desperately desires. But then an uninvited guest crashes the party, forcing her to step out of the discomfort zone where she dwells and save the day … and maybe even herself in the process.

Interview with Jesus Freak Blog – Eliza Gordon!

How did the idea of writing about a 911 operator come to be?
I spent three months as a 911 dispatcher in a small county in Oregon years ago. It was the scariest three months of my working life—I had a call come in where the victim had been found unconscious on the bathroom floor, blood coming out of his ears and nose, and my dispatch trainer told me that the man was definitely a goner. Blood coming from the ears is no good. I felt so sad that I quit soon after. My personality at that time in my life was too fresh and underdeveloped to handle high-stress calamity. Although Hollie Porter is calmer than I was at her age, the stress of the job is definitely getting to her too.

What inspired you to write this book?
I’ve been working on a rewrite for a darker YA project for the past few years, and I needed something fun and silly and lighthearted that wouldn’t be subject to a grueling editorial process. Plus I really wanted a project that Mr. Gordon and I could work on together. He usually writes screenplays, so he’s solid with structure, which is not one of my stronger suits. Our skill sets are very complementary—two great tastes that taste great together. Plus, who doesn’t like romance and fun?

Are you a hockey fan?
Oh yes! I used to go to Winterhawks games when I lived in Portland, and Mr. Gordon, Canada born and bred, played hockey as a kid and into his teens (a bad collarbone break ended that). We live in the suburbs outside Vancouver, British Columbia, so we cheer obnoxiously for the Vancouver Canucks, although Mr. Gordon’s lifelong favorite team is the Philadelphia Flyers. (Mr. Gordon is quite the hockey historian. Don’t tell that I bragged about him. He’s shy.)
Hockey really is a huge part of Canadian culture—with the Sochi Olympics underway, our local elementary school pulled the kids into the gymnasium on February 20 so they could watch the third period of the women’s gold medal game, Canada vs. the US. I root for both countries as I’m American but I’ve lived in Canada for twelve years. It was great fun for the kids to see the home team win on Russian ice. Earlier today Canada’s men’s hockey won versus the US, but like I said, it’s an either/or situation for me. Because Ryan Kesler (an American) is my favorite hockey stud, I did feel bad that he had a sad face as he exited the ice, but we just need these guys to stay healthy (no more injuries!) so they can get back to North America and the NHL can get back to business. We miss our Canucks!

Is there anyone that you based the characters on?
I definitely use real people as visual inspiration—for Ryan, the aforementioned Vancouver Canucks player Ryan Kesler was a huge inspiration (a coincidence about the name, though), as was Canadian actor Peter Mooney (Rookie Blue, Camelot), and most recently, British heartthrob Henry Cavill, à la the rough-and-rugged, bearded, oil-rig-saving Clark Kent in Man of Steel. Mmmmm, Mr. Cavill, known as vitamin Henry around these parts, could totally rock a playoff beard. I’d give up a body part to see him play Ryan Fielding.
As for Hollie, I don’t have an individual in mind who embodies her physical characteristics—Hollie is Every Woman, and I prefer to paint my female leads with lighter brushstrokes as I think that helps with relatability between character and reader—but in terms of inspiration for her snark, I pulled from Kristen Wiig’s awesome performance in Bridesmaids. That movie is really quite layered—it’s about a lot more than a group of bridesmaids who eat bad chicken and then crap in the bridal salon’s bathroom sink. (If you haven’t seen it, get thee to a Red Box.)

What was your favorite part of creating this book?
Laughing. We cracked ourselves up brainstorming the most outrageous things we could throw at poor Hollie. Also, we really wanted to showcase how fantastic British Columbia is—though some of the locales are fabricated (Revelation Cove, Brigand Bay), these are all based on actual places along the BC coastline. I can’t believe I get to live in such a gorgeous place.

Is there anything that you want your readers to get from this book?
An appreciation for otters—and really for all of our endangered sea-dwelling neighbors. I adore otters, and during childhood, I had my heart set on being a marine biologist (until I learned I’d have to go in deep water, and I’m terrified of deep water). There’s a scene in the book where Hollie talks about how, as a kid at the zoo and aquarium, she’d stand before the animals’ enclosures and try to convince them that she loved them more than any of the other people visiting that day. That was me—when Keiko the killer whale was staying at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, I would press my hands and face against the glass and try to communicate that I loved him best of all. I have no idea if he responded because I don’t speak orca.
But seriously, I would love it if readers walked away with an appreciation for the really scary prospect that sea otters, if not protected, could face extinction. California’s southern sea otter population only numbers around 3000 beauties. The northern sea otter, found along Washington, Canada, and Alaska, is a healthier population with numbers between 65,000 and 78,000*, although both populations are considered threatened. While now covered by the Endangered Species Act & Marine Mammal Protection Act, these little sweeties are also at risk from oil spills and poaching. And awareness is always the first step toward action!
(*Info from Friends of the Sea Otter. Find them online and on social media!)

As a writer, what has been the most rewarding thing that has happened?
I LOVE hearing from readers. LOVE IT. It is such an incredible feeling to have someone email or leave a message on Facebook or Twitter with positive feedback. And when people say that they’re laughing or that they related to Hollie? I can’t even describe what a total rush that is. I live to make people giggle.

How did you come up with this title?
Good question, for which I have no good answer. To be ridiculously honest, it just popped into my head as Hollie started to take shape. At first my agent didn’t like the title, but once they read the story, it was clear that Must Love Otters was an apt fit for what happens within the pages. It is a little unusual, I know, and I’ve seen comments online where people were at first unsure of reading a book with “otters” in the title—what the hell is this book even about? Seems we’re doing okay, though. If people are giggling and seeing the connection between Hollie and her otters, then we win.

Do you plan on continuing Hollie and Ryan’s story?
Mr. Gordon and I are talking about this—it would be interesting to see what happens to them after they become a committed couple. Will they stay at Revelation Cove? What kind of work will she do? Will the time spent in Monterey with the otters change her outlook on what she wants to do for the rest of her life? Will Hollie and Ryan tie the knot? Will there be babies? Will Ryan take that future offer to coach a hockey team? So many questions to consider! Whatever happens with them, though, you know that Hollie will bounce and tumble her way through it.

What is the next book you are working on?
The answer to this question always makes people frown at me: I’m superstitious, and so I can’t tell you! I will tell you this—it’s another romantic comedy, this time set exclusively in Portland, Oregon, and our leading lady has an affinity for rubber ducks and Star Wars. Is that enough? Look for its release late spring/early summer.
Thank you very much for the opportunity to visit and chat with you and your readers! We do hope you enjoy your journey through Hollie’s life in Must Love Otters. Find us on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Tumblr!

Excerpt!

“It took a long time to find you, Ms. Elton.”

Oh, no. Oh, no. Misty looked up into the steady gray gaze of the giant of a man standing in front of her. No! She was safe. It had been a year — a full year. It was only a few months ago that she had let down her guard, had decided it was safe to live again, had gone back to her natural hair color.
Jesse had moved on, surely. He wouldn’t have stayed single this long. He had to have a woman to boss around — to beat up on, by now. He would still hate her, still want her dead, but he wouldn’t still be searching for her. There was just no possible way.
“I…uh…I don’t know who you’re referring to,” she stuttered, and she crept toward the door to the back room. She was working a crappy job at a fast-food joint. It was nondescript, possibly even considered a bit seedy, and they hadn’t blinked when she’d given them her false name, her poorly done fake ID. She sure as heck wouldn’t eat the food there, not with their lax views on hygiene. They hadn’t even made her get a food handlers card. But, the job was working for her for now, allowing her to save up for her next move – though she wasn’t saving much.
If she could just get through the door, get to her locker, then she’d be able to grab her Taser. She’d started leaving it in her purse just a few months ago. Up until that point, she’d carried it on her, keeping the small, but hopefully effective, device in her pocket, just in reach of her shaking fingers.
This was what happened when you grew lax. This would be what killed her.
“Please don’t be afraid. I’m here to help you.”
“I don’t need help. You have the wrong person,” she said, her voice more steady. He was watching her move toward the door, but he wasn’t taking a menacing step toward her — wasn’t reaching for the gun she knew he had to have on him.
She was close, so close. Inching a bit closer to the door, she kept her eyes on his hands. Those would tell her his next move. She’d become an expert at reading Jesse through his hands. The second they clenched she had known she was in trouble.
This man’s hands were sitting idly at his hips, just kind of hanging there. “Can I please sit down with you for a few minutes of your time? I won’t ask you to go anywhere alone with me.” His voice, she was sure, was supposed to convey trust.
That only made her more suspicious.
“Sorry. I have to get something from the back room.” She took her chances and darted through the door, not looking back as she made her way to her locker. Thankfully, it was open, since it was only her and one other kid on shift, who she actually trusted. She quickly reached into her purse.
When her fingers clasped around the small Taser, she felt her fear dwindling. It wasn’t as deadly as a gun, but it would knock a large man down long enough for her to get away.
        “Ms. Elton, please–”
He’d followed her. And he was grabbing her arm.
Misty didn’t hesitate. She turned back to face him and pushed the button on her weapon. His eyes widened with shock followed by a shot of pain as thousands of volts of electricity traveled through his skin into his stomach.
He released her arm, and Misty took a step, planning on getting the hell away — far away from him and this place. It was time to find a new city. She’d stayed too long, far longer than she had originally planned, but her car had died, and she hadn’t saved enough to move again yet. Almost but not quite. The heck with it now, though. She’d take a bus, and live in a shelter for a while.
She wouldn’t be returned to Jesse, not ever again.
When the man’s hand snaked out and grabbed her leg, tripping her, Misty gasped. She got ready to use the stun gun again, longer this time.
“I don’t think so,” he growled between clenched teeth. He smacked the gun from her hand and pinned her beneath him.
